Boris the Temerarious

I just listened to John Humphrys trying to interview Boris Johnson on yesterday's Today programme (I hope that makes sense) and this came to mind.

Though his political views are alien to me, Boris is hard to dislike as an individual. Amongst all the clownish posturing, he is one smart guy, and I love his vast vocabulary. "Temerarious" was the stand-out word he dropped into the conversation with Humprhys. ANYONE who casually says 'temerarious' is OK in my book.

Did I say conversation ? Not so much a conversation as a monologue with Boris completely in control and John Humphrys trying to get a word in edge-wise. The title of his book "Lost for Words" seemed suddenly poignant and apposite in equal measure.

The interview also made me think about the sigmoid curve, the optimum time to retire, and the wisdom to recognise it.

Better (and more comfortable) to have people ask 'Why did you retire ?' than 'Why didn't you retire ?'
