Mum’s odd holiday list ?

While searching for something quite different, I came across some cards from my mother.

The most disturbing (?) is one of the Mersey Tunnel. She has used it as an aide-memoire, for some trip perhaps. The neat writing on the back reads as follows:

Flask

Fenox

Holder

Dishcloth

Fireguard

Pension

David

Myself

Meat

Hmmm, OK.

What kind of trip could this be ? Fenox I remember were drops for a bunged-up nose, and everybody in the house was addicted to them, bunged-up or not.

But given that this must be stuff to remember for going somewhere, it's a pretty random list. A fireguard and a dishcloth ? Intriguing.

The most alarming thing on the list is Myself. Was she thinking that all the stuff she had collected might set off without her ? And what were the chances that she might forget me ? Clearly greater than ideally I would like to think.

And Pension ? She died at 49, so pensions were still a distant dream. She must have been about 30 when she wrote the list down.

If it was a trip, why no mention of tickets ?

I have been a veggie for over 40 years, and a clue to where this came from is in the last line. Meat was what we ate. Nobody ever wondered what kind of meat it might be. And when cooked it may have been hard to tell anyway. But "meat" sums up the whole gastronomic experience of my fifties childhood.

I only hope she had not got round to prioritising when she wrote the list. This woman really knew how to party.
